This Month in Focus: The Leo Lunation Cycle

This Month in Focus: The Leo Lunation Cycle

What a Lunation Cycle Is and Why It Matters

Every month, or "moonth", as it was once called, the Moon completes a full cycle from New Moon to Full Moon and back again. This rhythm — the lunation cycle — acts like a natural calendar, marking beginnings, illuminating developments, shedding light on revelations, and releases of understanding. In astrology, each lunation functions as a monthly storyline, showing what is emerging, what is intensifying, and what is ready to shift.

A New Moon begins a new chapter. A Full Moon brings clarity and culmination. The phases in between reveal the emotional and energetic flow of the month.

Following the lunation cycle helps you understand the themes rising in your life, where your energy is naturally moving, and what needs attention or adjustment. It guides us to know when to initiate action and lead ourselves forward, when to reflect, and when to let go. It allows us to work in harmony with the cosmic tide rather than against it so we get better outcomes in life.

Instead of feeling swept along by events, the lunation cycle gives you a map — a way to recognise patterns, anticipate turning points, and navigate life with more awareness and confidence.

Each lunation article offers insight into both personal experience and collective atmosphere, helping you understand not just what is happening, but why it feels the way it does. It’s a practical, intuitive guide to the month ahead, grounded in the oldest rhythm humans have ever followed: the cycle of the Moon.

THE LEO LUNATION — WARMTH, CONFIDENCE & A NEW DIRECTION

Leo’s Fire in the Heart of Winter

The flames of identity and enthusiasm that belong to Leo are fanned by the August winds, right in the middle of the Australian winter, bringing emotional warmth back into cold days and reminding us that even in the quietest season something in us still wants to shine. Leo’s fire glows like an ember that refuses to fade — a spark of confidence, creativity, and expressive vitality rising against the stillness of winter.

When a New Moon lands in Leo, the shift is unmistakable. You can feel it in the air, hear it in the way people speak, and see it in the way the country behaves. Leo is the part of the Zodiac that reminds us of who we truly are. It represents the spark of the Individual Self meeting the Social World and sharing its light — that inner radiance that connects us to The Great Creating Energy of the Universe. Its essence is simple: Be‑ing. Expressing. Creating. Living in the moment in whatever ways feel natural. When you watch children lost in play — inventing stories, singing, dancing, laughing without a care for who’s watching — you’re seeing Leo in its purest form. This lunation invites you to free that child within and celebrate your Self again. Demonstrate to us who you are.

As the New Moon activates Australia's national 5th house, the context for this month's theme is youth, creativity and the arts, entertainment, sport, celebration, joy, leisure, and cultural expression — the country’s morale begins to lift. People feel more willing to get out of the doldrums and celebrate. Conversations sound lighter, warmer, and more humorous. The media fills with stories of culture, creativity, sport, youth, and national pride. Public behaviour reflects it too — more events, more gatherings, more colour, more performance, more “showing up.”

This is the kind of lunation where a young artist goes viral, a national sports moment captures attention, a cultural festival becomes a talking point, or a creative movement catches fire. Children and youth issues rise to the surface. Morale lifts in a noticeable way. Leo brings a collective exhale — a moment where the country remembers how to enjoy itself — and Leo also brings visibility. If there are issues around children, education, youth welfare, or creative industries that have been neglected, they come forward now. If morale has been low, this lunation exposes it — not to shame, but to heal. If the country has been feeling small, this lunation reminds it of its heart and its true identity.

Leo lifts the chin. It opens the chest. It says, “Remember who you/we are.” This is a lunation where Australia remembers its spark — and then shares it. Being noble and generous, Leo’s energy loves to celebrate life itself, and “Fun” is its biggest keyword. It’s the parable of the Lion and the Mouse — a reminder that even if you’ve let yourself become small, this lunation shines a light on that part of you so you can remember that you matter. It’s okay to take up space. It’s okay to shine. Step into the noble heart of the Lion, roar, and be seen. And Leo also teaches humility. If you’ve wandered toward the conceited edge, this lunation asks you to reign yourself back in and get real. There’s plenty of spotlight for everyone. Celebrate others too. True Leo energy doesn’t compete; it uplifts, and it knows that every spark contributes to the great light we all share.

Leo’s purpose in the Zodiac is to remind you that joy and creation are sacred, and self‑expression is divine. Shining doesn’t mean overshadowing — it means illuminating. This lunation calls you to remember that your light is part of something greater, and this may become clearer in the three‑day lead‑up to the Full Moon on 28 August 2026.

There is also a phoenix moment in operation that began last month, fuelling this opening of the Australian heart.

The Cazimi — A Burst of Clarity and Confidence

This month's Leo Lunation is spurred on by last month's Jupiter cazimi 29 July at 12:50 AEST when Jupiter sat "in the heart of the Sun" for a few hours, which only happens once per year. This alignment magnifies optimism, clarity, and creative purpose. It’s a cosmic spotlight that restores faith in possibility — both personal and collective. Under this cazimi, confidence expands, morale lifts, and the nation’s creative pulse strengthens. It’s a reminder that joy itself is a form of wisdom, and that when we shine together, we illuminate far more than we ever could alone.

When I cast this lunation chart (see above), the first thing that struck me was how clean and bright the Leo fire is. The Sun and Moon sit together at 20° Leo in the 5th house of Australia's chart (highlighted above) untouched by any major aspects to other planets. It’s rare to see a New Moon this pure — a lunation that expresses its sign without interference or complication. It’s Leo in its most natural form: warm, playful, creative, celebratory. You'll notice also the little horseshoe-like symbol at the right of the Moon (south node) - this symbolises our karmic past, our accomplishments and triumphs as a nation and what we can bring to the table this month. The Cosmos is inviting a collective reflection on the nation’s past joys, achievements, and moments of pride. It highlights the times when Australia felt confident, expressive, and united — when creativity flourished, when communities celebrated together, and when the country carried a strong sense of identity and accomplishment.

This placement encourages us to bring back the pride Australia once held in itself: the cultural successes, the sporting triumphs, the artistic brilliance, the national moments that lifted morale and made people feel part of something vibrant and meaningful. It’s not about clinging to the past — it’s about reconnecting with what has uplifted us before, so we can carry that spirit forward in a new way. The node being also in Leo is the Cosmos's way of saying look within, connect with the natural joy and enthusiasm and the past's glories and fan the flames so we experience that now.

The Phoenix & The Sabian Symbol

The chart itself is a bucket shape, with the handle being Pluto up top of the chart at 4° Aquarius in the 11th house of humanity & the collective. All that Leo fire of the fifth house opposite pours into powerful Pluto as the outlet of the chart. Pluto is the symbol of elimination, renewal and purification which always seeks to penetrate to the truth and the heart of the matter to eliminate what constrains our true expression of Self. One of the higher and wiser symbols of Pluto is the Phoenix that combusts in its own fire and rises up from the ashes reborn and renewed. This is Australia's theme this month. The Cazimi last month was a phoenix moment too, so very positive energies are at play this month. Your personal joy, your creativity, your playfulness, your spark — all of it wants to move outward into the collective, into community, into groups and especially into the national mood. Let's move forward into the future with passion, and this lunation isn’t just about shining, it’s about shining in a way that creates ripples in society.

The 4th Degree

I always find it fascinating to discover the meanings hidden inside the 360 degrees of the zodiac circle, for each one contains an abstract image called a Sabian symbol that offers more information about what's going within yourself or the collective. The Sabian Symbols were created in 1925 through the collaboration of astrologer Marc Edmund Jones and clairvoyant Elsie Wheeler in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. Elsie received an inspired vision for each degree of the zodiac wheel. So, let's discover the meaning of Pluto in the 4th degree of Aquarius (where currently Pluto sits) according to the Sabian Symbol.

The Sabian symbol or picture is, "A Hindu Yogi Demonstrates Extraordinary Inner Radiance".

The deeper meaning is:

"Disciplined cultivation of inner radiance and spiritual mastery, where personal transformation becomes a visible influence on the world". Leo is all about cultivating the radiant light within and making it visible by being seen to actively demonstrate creative self-expression and leadership as an individual. So, this is what Pluto is activating right now in the 4th degree of Aquarius - the sign of humanity at large and the desire for a world that unites individual diversity for the harmony of the Collective, not just the individual's desires. Pluto will remain on this mission until 27 January 2027.

Australian Stories

Mars on the IC: Protecting the Home & Hearth

There’s a deeper pulse running under this bright Leo New Moon, and you’ll feel it in your chest and in your home long before you notice it in the sky.

Mars sits at almost 1° Cancer, exactly conjunct the IC point of the chart which represents the root of the chart. This is a beginning, an initiation point. Politically, this relates to Home Affairs. Collectively, this is the place of the land, the farms, the homes, the families, the Nation's ancestry, emotional foundations, and the private corners of life that nobody else sees. When Mars lands here, it doesn’t create drama; it creates movement. It stirs our roots and awakens something up inside the quiet spaces of your world. And because Mars is tied directly into the nodes (see above - arrow to the horseshoe South Node in Leo - national karma), this stirring has a clear message - Australia needs to protect and repair its very identity - it's Spark! The Housing Crisis, farming collapses and foreclosures, cost of living pressures facing our families - it's hard to celebrate our Nation and our people with the Leo pride, while we are facing these issues, but we may see some relief if we keep our inner light glowing. Collective hearts can move mountains.

You may feel this as a sudden urge to protect something important in your life, or to fix something in your home. To tend to a family matter, or repair something that’s been quietly waiting for your attention. Mars on the IC doesn’t shout — it taps you gently, but assertively on the shoulder and says, “This part of your life matters. Give it some care.”

And here’s the beautiful part: whatever you tend to privately this month doesn’t stay private. Mars activating the South Node means your personal actions ripple outward. Something you stabilise at home, something you repair, something you nurture — it ends up contributing to the collective in ways you might not expect.

This lunation links your personal foundation to the wider community. What you strengthen in yourself strengthens the group. What you heal in your home supports the future.

So, while Leo is encouraging you to play, celebrate yourself, and let your creativity wander freely, Mars is quietly guiding you toward emotional courage — the kind that shows up in small, meaningful actions that makes your inner world feel sturdier and gives your joy a place to land.

This month isn’t just about shining. It’s about strengthening the ground beneath your feet so your light can reach further.

The Tight Aspects: How They Shape the Month

Aspects in astrological charts are where one planet connects and relates with another, much like us in relationships with each other. These relationships are shown by coloured lines between the planets. Some relationships are tense while others are easy. This month the Sun and Moon stand alone in Leo without any other planets directly in aspect to them. However, the rest of the chart hums with subtle activity — a network of tight aspects that colour the month with nuance, movement, and emotional texture. These aspects don’t overshadow the Leo fire; they enrich it. They give the lunation its emotional depth, its social tone, and its collective rhythm.

The Story the Aspects Tell

Healing the Foundations & The Nation's Psyche

At the base of this lunation chart, Mars in Cancer sits conjunct the IC, the deepest point of the national psyche — the home zone, the land, the farms, the families, the emotional foundation, the ancestral root. Here, Mars stirs the soil of the collective heart, exposing what has been buried: the exhaustion, the strain, and the quiet anger of those who feel forgotten. This is not just domestic tension; it’s the pulse of a country reckoning with its own vulnerability.

Mars forms a sextile to Chiron in Taurus in the 2nd house, the zone of national resources, affordability, and economic stability. Chiron here represents the wound of value — the pain of feeling depleted, undervalued, or economically wounded. It speaks for those who have given much and received little in return.

This aspect highlights the returned soldiers and veterans who carry invisible scars, the families on the breadline stretched by rising costs, and the people who have slipped through the cracks of the NDIS — those who have been left waiting, unheard, or unsupported. It symbolises the budget crisis as a deeper wound: the feeling that the nation’s lifeblood — its taxes, its effort, its trust — has been drained, leaving people feeling like they've “been left out on the mountainside to die,” as if the system itself has forgotten its duty of care.

Mars in Cancer brings emotion and urgency to these issues. It ignites the will to protect, repair, and restore. The sextile to Chiron opens new pathways for healing, not through grand gestures, but through practical compassion — leadership that listens, communities that mobilise, and policies that remember the human face behind the numbers.

This is the lunation’s call to repair the foundations — to rebuild the sense of belonging and value that holds a nation together. It’s about turning pain into purpose, frustration into reform, and vulnerability into strength. Mars provides the energy; Chiron provides the awareness. Together, they remind us that healing begins at home — and that the heart of a country, like the heart of a person, must be cared for if it is to keep beating strongly.

Mercury sextile Uranus

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery.”

- Bob Marley, The Redemption Song.

Mercury in Leo in the 5th house lights up the national conversation with creativity, youthfulness, and expressive confidence, while Uranus in Gemini in the 3rd house electrifies the media landscape, communication networks, education systems, and the collective voice. Together they create a sharp mental spark — ideas accelerate, conversations become more curious and inventive, and the national dialogue shifts toward flexibility and fresh thinking. Uranus disrupts the usual media rhythms, producing unexpected announcements, viral youth movements, sudden debates around education or curriculum, and rapid shifts in public messaging. It can stir ideological agitation and youth protests, but it also drives genuine reform: modernising outdated communication systems, updating teaching models, improving access to information, and pushing for innovation that benefits everyone rather than just the loudest group, which is what we have been seeing in universities shying from their duty of care to all students and not just the activists. Under this influence, Australia feels mentally awake, playful, and ready to think in new ways — a breath of fresh air moving through classrooms, media channels, and the national conversation.

Diplomatic Clarity & Media Wake‑Ups

Venus in Libra in the 7th house forms a trine to Uranus in Gemini in the 3rd house, linking diplomacy with media, communication, and the national conversation. This aspect produces wake‑up calls: sudden revelations in the media, unexpected stories

breaking, quick shifts in public messaging, and diplomatic issues becoming talking points. Uranus shakes the media awake while Venus softens the impact, creating clarity without chaos.

The public may see something clearly for the first time — a narrative flips, a hidden dynamic becomes obvious, or an international situation is understood in a new light. Youth voices also influence diplomacy, thanks to Mercury in the 5th house, bringing creativity, morale, and expressive confidence into discussions about foreign affairs.

Uranus introduces ideological shocks, challenging assumptions about alliances, cooperation, national values, and how Australia communicates globally — but Venus ensures these shocks are constructive rather than destabilising.

Integrated Picture:

  • Mercury sextile Venus = Opportunities for warmer, more expressive, diplomatic communications

  • Venus in Libra (7th) = balanced foreign affairs and visible diplomacy

  • Uranus in Gemini (3rd) = media disruption, sudden clarity, ideological wake‑ups, new inventions and AI escalation.

Together they create a month where diplomacy is visible, communication is elegant, media is alert, revelations surface, youth voices matter, and assumptions are challenged. The national conversation becomes sharper and more honest, and tensions are managed with intelligence rather than aggression. This is a lunation where Australia speaks clearly, listens carefully, and sees more than it expected — with the media acting as a channel for insight rather than conflict.

Our Personal Experience of This

Mercury in Leo sextile Venus in Libra brings warm, expressive, and diplomatic communication into personal life. Conversations feel easier, kinder, and more balanced, with a stronger desire to listen, negotiate, and keep harmony in relationships. Venus in Libra heightens awareness of fairness, boundaries, and how we show up for others, encouraging graceful conflict resolution and more thoughtful connection.

Uranus in Gemini in the 3rd house adds sudden clarity: unexpected conversations, mental breakthroughs, surprising messages, and “aha” moments that shift how we think or communicate. Hidden dynamics become obvious, perspectives flip, and outdated patterns are released. When Venus links to Uranus, relationship communication gets a wake‑up call — truths surface, insights land, and we understand others (and ourselves) more clearly, but without chaos or drama.

Together, these energies create a month where we speak more openly, hear more truthfully, and see our relationship patterns with sharper honesty. It’s a time of clearer communication, kinder dialogue, and personal revelations that help us relate with more intelligence, balance, and authenticity.
